If you read my post Branching Out: Becoming a Lifetime Learner, you might remember that my husband and I took a trip to a local farm to learn how to make soap. We were both excited to begin making our own soap at home after taking the class and getting more comfortable with the process. There was a bit of a learning curve, and we had to do a little research to find out why some of our batches didn’t come out as anticipated. We’ve found the most important thing to pay attention to is temperature, as incorrect temperature when mixing can lead to cracking in the bars. It’s become a bit of a dance, with both of us playing our own role in the process and working together seamlessly. It is always a joy when we see the finished product. There’s something about making something you use every day with your own two hands. That seems to be a resounding theme in homesteading and carries over to so many different aspects of our life. Making your own anything leads to an immense feeling of satisfaction, pride, and joy. In addition, making something alongside my husband is such a blessing. Having him not only be involved, but be just as excited as I am makes me so happy! I seriously am so lucky to have him (and if you enjoyed the title of this post, you can thank him for his contribution!)
Consistency is Key
Soap is one of those things that takes time. It isn’t ready to be used the same day, or even the next day. Soap has to cure and dry for at least a month before it’s in the best condition to use. Because of this, we have been trying to be really consistent in our soap making, making a batch every few days or at least every week. It’s become so routine that nearly every day one of our kids asks, “are we making soap today?”. Now, you might be wondering who needs that much soap? We have spent hours making soap, mixing scents, cutting bars, and packaging. After working out the kinks, and getting some feedback from family and friends, we have decided to bring our bars of soap to market.
Our soap is made with only saponified coconut and sweet almond oils, scent (mostly essential oils), and sometimes an exfoliator such as poppyseed or oatmeal. We have taken the time to source only quality ingredients, organic wherever possible, and do not use any artificial dyes. We will only ever sell products that we use for our own family, because to me, you are all my family! (On that note: I’ve noticed several of you are viewing my posts from countries other than the US which I think is super cool! I’d love if you dropped a comment so I can find out who is supporting me internationally!)

How to Purchase
Because this is a new venture, I don’t currently have any sort of store page set up. Hopefully I will be able to make that happen soon. In the meantime, heres what to do if you are interested in purchasing some of Spontaneous Homestead’s soap. Please leave a comment with an email address I can contact you at, and which scents you are interested in. Alternatively, if you are friends with me or Derek on social media feel free to contact us there as well.

What’s Next
As far as our bath and body endeavors, you can expect to see body lotion and lip balm at some point in the near future. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted when those become available! If there are any soap scents you’d like to see us make in the future, please let me know. We want to make the things YOU want to have!
Next up on the blog: an update on the homestead following Tropical Storm Debby which is hitting us as I write this. Look for it this weekend!
